Borrow and his business partner, Mike Humphrey, knew that such a suit had been developed in the 1930s by an engineer called “Pop” Peress. Known as the “Tritonia”, it was revolutionary in that it featured lightweight magnesium in the main body and joints using a trapped cushion of oil to keep the surfaces moving smoothly. Although the Tritonia had performed perfectly during trials at depths of 135 metres, it had never been developed commercially. |
